Why CBD Oil Could Help Treat Chronic Pain

Blog thumbnail in

A lot of things have been written about the CBD oil online and this includes its ability to cure almost all types of diseases. Unfortunately, there’s just so much hype about CBD online.

But the good news is that, when it comes to treating conditions ranging from chronic pain to epilepsy, the CBD oil is truly safe and effective and is, in fact, life changing for many people.

Psychoactive cannabis, more commonly known as marijuana, has been used frequently to relieve pain due to menstrual cramps, migraines, and others. But CBD oil doesn’t contain any THC, which is the mind-altering chemical found in cannabis. Therefore, it provides several the same benefits but without the risk of getting “high”

Chronic Pain and the Endocannabinoid System

For decades now, research into cannabis, along with its various compounds, has been limited due to the government’s war on drugs. But thanks to the changing laws and the legalities governing the CBD oil, scientists are slowly starting to realize the effectiveness of these substances in dealing with chronic pain.

The special receptors found in our brain as well as in our nervous systems are able to respond well to the natural substances that are somewhat similar to cannabis. Although the behavior is somewhat different from the CBD-only extract or cannabis, both substances are able to interact with similar receptors called the endocannabinoid system.

Scientists now understand that these endocannabinoids can help regulate our body’s behavior in various ways, from the feeling of pain, motor function, and even appetite.

CBD Shows Significant Potential for Pain Relief

Most of the scientific researches on CBD suggest that the substance is capable of treating several different kinds of pain. In one study, a group of researchers from Oxford looked into the benefits of THC, CBD, and a combination of both substances in treating patients who are suffering from neurogenic pain.

Most patients suffered from multiple sclerosis and others from pain resulting in limb amputation and spinal cord injuries. The patients regularly took one or more of the substances and a placebo at home for two weeks. The researchers found that the pain relief associated with both CBD and THC was more superior compared to the placebo. Not only did the patients experience relief, but unpleasant symptoms were also alleviated.

CBD Can Be a Safe Option for Pain Management

Just like with any health conditions, people suffering from chronic pain will often choose to go for a combination of approaches, from taking pharmaceutical drugs to stretching. Research shows that adding CBD oil to the treatment regimen can be a significant part of chronic pain management.

Since the CBD oil can be legally used in all states and comes with only minor side effects, the substance is definitely worth giving a try if you’re suffering from chronic pain. The oil can be consumed as an extract, inhaled through an e-cigarette, applied topically on the skin etc. As some of the states continue to ease the legal restrictions imposed on the use of cannabis, more and more people are expected to explore the substance’ painkilling potential.
