Advocates of hemp believe that cultivating hemp is an excellent sustainable alternative for small-scale farmers. Of course, as a highly sustainable material, hemp is also good for the environment. According to some hemp advocates, the amount of biomass that was produced from hemp per year is equivalent to the size of an entire forest, yet hemp can only be produced in a four-month period.

Unlike the other annual crops, hemp only needs a small amount of herbicide and pesticide. Hemp is also a great alternative to rotation crop since it’s capable of replenishing and preserving the nitrates of the soil. In addition, if hemp is grown in a large scale, it could help strike a balance between carbon dioxide emissions as the plant breathes in carbon dioxide and emits the same amount once it’s burned as fuel.

Those who are cultivating hemp for biofuel are employing a process known as pyrolysis. This is basically a refining technique where heat is applied to the plant to be converted into fuel. However, in order for this technology to be cost-effective, the facilities must be installed within 50 miles from the field where the crop is grown.

Hemp biomass is converted into fuel by means of chemical decomposition or biological digestion. For this process, the waste coming from hemp is removed and made into carbon nanomaterial. This material is used as an alternative to the more expensive graphene, a nanomaterial used for operating high-powered batteries and supercapacitors. The supercapacitor is responsible for charging batteries fast for the braking system of the vehicles.
