How to Profit from the Hemp Industry

Blog thumbnail in

With the recent legalization of hemp, more farmers can now grow the crop and benefit from this thriving industry. In fact, hemp is touted as the next big cash crop. Yet, some growers are still shackled by the fact that hemp, which is derived from cannabis, has a reputation for being a source of dangerous drugs. The plant is closely related to marijuana, which the federal officials have listed under the same category as LSD and heroin.

Hemp as a Perfect Cash Crop

Hemp is a unique crop in that every part of the plant can be used for a wide range of things. Plus, it’s so easy to cultivate. As a matter of fact, the growing season of the crop is too short that some growers would plant them right after they harvest other crops. Furthermore, the deep roots of the plant create an ideal growing condition for other crops and its dense foliage is capable of choking out weed. All these attributes make hemp a perfect cash crop for all farmers in the US and all over the world.

Before, hemp was known as the world’s standard fiber, thanks to its unmatched tensile strength. Hemp can be used in producing products that are either fiber-based or cellulose-based. In fact, before its prohibition, the fiber was used in producing more than 5,000 different textile products. With the recent technologies in processing, these end uses of hemp were expanded rapidly to several applications and can even replace plastics.

Hemp is Good for the Health

Hemp seeds are highly nutritious. Aside from having a good amount of Omega 3 fatty acids, the seeds are also a great source of high-quality protein, better than flax seeds and chia seeds. Furthermore, hemp is a good source of Vitamin E and minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc, and iron. In recent years, the plant has been touted as a great source of CBD or cannabidiol, which is the non-psychoactive attribute of THC or tetrahydrocannabinol.

Because of the vast amount of nutrients present in hemp, researchers have shown a growing interest in the crop. It has been found that the CBD has a beneficial influence on the body’s endocannabinoid system, the part of the body that’s responsible for regulating a number of cognitive and physiological processes. Several studies have also shown that CBD is effective at reducing inflammation, relieving pain, preventing anxiety, and protecting the brain. In fact, it’s been known to regulate the level of blood sugar, making it a valuable alternative to some conventional over-the-counter medicines.

Hemp-Based Consumer Products

Given the many benefits of hemp, it’s not surprising to find a number of companies that are now developing hemp-based consumer products. Unfortunately, a lot of these companies have limited access to technology due to the issues surrounding the crop. Once these issues are addressed, hemp will no doubt become one of the most profitable agricultural crops.
