How Hemp Can Help with Antibiotic Resistance

Blog thumbnail in

The cannabinoid antibiotics might be the best solution to the dangers of antibiotic resistance. It seems like society is about to lose its battle against harmful bacteria. In fact, there are some bacteria that are becoming resistant to antibiotics and the efforts of researchers to develop new types of antibiotics have come to a stop. But it’s not really all bad news. A new research has shown that a particular set of compounds could be helpful in managing the threat of bacteria and destroy superbugs like the MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. Obtained from hemp and cannabis, these CBD antibiotics could be the future to fighting bacteria.

Antibiotic Resistance – A Major Threat

The antibiotic crisis would have been prevented if only we have used them in the right way. It’s been said that patients and doctors misuse antibiotics most of the time. This is according to the data obtained from the CDC or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But doctors cannot be blamed for overprescribing because there are some patients who pressure their doctors for prescribing them with antibiotics more than the allowed dosage. Others even choose to self-medicate and buy their medicines online from unregulated sellers.

But taking antibiotics unnecessarily doesn’t really come with long-term benefits. Overusing the medication will only speed up the rate in which the bacteria will become resistant to antibiotics and this could further lead to serious health issues. The CDC estimates that in the US, there are more than 9,000 and 70,000 MRSA-related deaths.

Cannabinoid Antibiotics Could Be the Solution

The study of cannabinoid MRSA started as early as the 1950s. In fact, the cannabinoid has thousands of years of history in terms of medical use, dating back to ancient China and ancient Egypt. In the 1950s, the cannabis showed promising signs. However, with no individual components of the plant at this stage, it was hard to identify which particular compounds were really helping. It wasn’t until the 1960s when researchers started to isolate cannabinoids that the Cannabis Sativa was fully understood.

Most of the antibiotics tend to target the fatty acid synthesis or the DNA gyrase. However, cannabinoids appear to go after none of these. The endocannabinoid system wasn’t known until the 1990s, and therefore, it’s still not known how the cannabinoids interact with the body. But given that these compounds are as effective as the antibiotics, they are most likely to function according to a specific mechanism.

CBD Used as an Antibiotic

It has been found that the CBD is effective in treating various types of the MRSA or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a type of superbug that tends to attack the human body. This includes the two strains that are predominant in various British hospitals.

When the cannabinoids antibacterial compound was proven to be effective in treating these unusual strains, the researchers realized that the cannabinoids may work differently compared to the conventional antibiotics.
